TAKING CARE OF YOUR CHAINMAILLE & SCALEMAILLE

Much of my maille is made out of anodized aluminum, which can be easily and safely washed.  My preference for washing aluminum jewellery is to put a couple of drops of blue Dawn dish soap into some cool water, and then clean the jewellery carefully in the soapy water.  Once you are satisfied that it is clean, gently rinse it with cool water and lay it flat on a towel or paper towel to dry.

You can also clean your anodized titanium and stainless steel jewellery with the above method.

Please note that the anodization on your jewellery can scratch if you are not careful or use anything abrasive on it.  As the anodization is a coating on the metal, this is to be expected.  However, it does not scratch easily, so as long as you are careful, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Take care not to soak the clasps on your jewellery in the water when you are cleaning it – depending on the piece, the clasp may be made of something other than aluminum or stainless steel, and it may not like being wet.  If your piece consists of materials in addition to metal (such as semi-precious stone beads), those should also not be washed with water.
