Taking Care of Your Chainmaille & Scalemaille
Most of my maille is crafted from anodized aluminum, which can be safely washed with ease. For aluminum jewellery, I recommend the following gentle cleaning method:
- Mix a few drops of blue Dawn dish soap into cool water.
- Clean the jewelry carefully in the soapy water.
- Rinse it gently with cool water.
- Lay it flat on a towel or paper towel to dry.
This cleaning method also applies to anodized titanium and stainless steel jewellery.
Please be mindful that the anodization on your jewellery can scratch if handled roughly or cleaned with abrasive substances. While the anodization is a protective coating, occasional scratches may occur. However, with careful handling, scratching is minimal.
Avoid soaking the clasps of your jewellery in water during cleaning, as some clasps may be made of materials other than aluminum or stainless steel and may not tolerate moisture well. Additionally, if your piece includes materials beyond metal (such as semi-precious stone beads), refrain from washing those components with water.
